Truthfully, all nine volt batteries are not very good. Why? Because they are actually six tiny 1.5V button cells (watch batteries) stacked in a casing. There is no way to make a good battery that small, though lithium 9V batteries are much better (and much more expensive) than alkalines.
These are as good as it gets for alkalines, and are the most cost effective solution if you need them for general use.
For smoke alarms, however, get the higher-priced lithium version. Smoke alarms use so little power that a lithium 9V can often power them for their entire ten year lifespan. After ten years, replace the smoke alarms and the batteries, and you are done for another ten years.
